Alternate Spell System

In the world of Lexandria Spellcasters receive spell points. They receive 1 spell point for every spell level they are able to cast. A first level mage would have 1 spell point (1 level one spell) while a fifth level mage would have 9 spell points (2 first level spells, 2 second level spells and 1 third level spell).

A spell requires 1 spell point per level of spell to be able to memorize or pray for a specific spell (a specific fifth level spell would require 5 spell points). Mages or priests may cast any spell they know without studying or praying for it by spending twice the required amount to memorize or pray for a specific spell of the same level (a nonspecific fifth level spell would require 10 spell points).

Wizards can learn a spell of a level they can not cast as outlined in Players Option: Spells & Magic. They may only cast these higher level spells as fixed magic. It also costs them twice the amount of spell points to cast them.

For example, a level five mage (whose has 9 spell points) who manages to learn a fourth level spell could cast said spell as a fixed magic for 8 spell points.

A wizard must study his/her spell book for 10 minutes to regain 1 spell point spent for free magics. For example, a mage who casts two fifth level free magic spells must study his spellbook for 200 minutes (2X 5X2X10 minutes) to regain the spell points back.

In Lexandria, expendable material components are not used. Priests use their holy symbols as the material component in their spells as well in their turning dead ability. Priests who attempt to turn or command undead without their holy symbol turn them as a priest one level lower.

Some printed spells have had their level adjusted to make up for not having expensive material components. You can find these spells in the alternate spell list.
